Helen has enjoyed a diverse career, including over two decades as an executive director, and as a voluntary Board member for major Scottish housing associations. Her experience provides a strong combination of strategic and practitioner understanding of governance requirements, and of the issues affecting operational service delivery.

She has an established track record of working with a wide range of organisations and in a variety of contexts. Helen is very familiar with regulatory requirements and codes of conduct for Board members. She has represented both regional and Scottish social housing sector on high level strategic groups. She has a very good awareness of broader policy and emerging trends, with the ability to connect both strategic and practical experience to the development of sound operational solutions.

As an executive director for a major Scottish housing association, Helen was responsible for leading the planning and delivery of all customer services to a diverse client base. She has led teams through complex change processes resulting from organisational growth, funding changes,and changing service requirements – and successfully implemented the outcomes. She has direct experience of both the challenges and positive benefits of change.

She has extensive experience of reviewing both policy and practice against statutory, regulatory and good practice frameworks, including the completion and assessment of several accreditation frameworks. Through her work with North Star, Helen has also contributed to the in-depth analytical review of frontline service areas for housing organisations, which has included desk top research, stakeholder and customer interviews and consultations, policy review and assurance checks against regulatory standards and expectations. Helen has been responsible for a generic customer services team, including delivery of all aspects of allocations, tenancy management, repairs, planned maintenance and voids maintenance arrangements. She has taken a particular interest in rural and small community housing issues and sustainability throughout her career.

She has strong analytical and research skills, combined with an ability to pull together complex information, and explain it in clear terms to a range of audiences. People working with her have routinely commended her calm and professional approach, and her ability to quickly foster positive working relationships, intelligent contributions, and her friendly, accessible style.
